HYROX's New Elite 15 Qualification System: Points Over Times

Starting in the 2026/27 season, HYROX replaces time-based qualification with a points system and mandatory Athlete Licence, rewarding consistency over one-off performances.

The biggest competitive shakeup in HYROX history

The HYROX Elite 15 — the top tier of competitive fitness racing — is undergoing its most significant transformation yet. Starting with the 2026/27 season, the qualification system will shift from a pure time-based model to a points-based system, fundamentally changing how athletes earn their spot among the elite.

The message is clear: auto-qualification is retired — one great race won't cut it anymore. Consistency, strategy, and smart season planning are the new currency.

How the new points system works

Instead of chasing qualifying times at a single event, athletes will now accumulate points across multiple races over a rolling 365-day window. Only their best results count — top 5 races for singles, and top 3 for doubles.

Points are awarded based on two factors:

  1. How you finish relative to the field — using a percentile-driven system, not just finishing position
  2. The tier of the event — stronger races carry more points

Points by event tier

Higher-tier events offer more points to the winner, with reported figures as follows:

Event Tier Winner's Points
Standard Pro ~105
Regional Elite 15 ~108
Major Elite 15 ~110
Elite 15 World Championship ~115

This means that performing well at a Major in Hamburg or Phoenix carries more weight than a strong result at a standard Pro race. Athletes on the cusp will need to think carefully about which events to enter and how many races to run.

The new Athlete Licence

To participate in the Elite 15 rankings, athletes must now hold an active HYROX Athlete Licence, priced at €197 per season ($230 USD). Without it, race results simply won't count toward Elite 15 qualification.

The licence also comes with some perks:

  • Priority access to "first wave" slots at qualifying races
  • Enhanced administrative support
  • Agreement to a code of conduct and anti-doping regulations

Interestingly, HYROX has been tracking "ghost points" for licensed athletes since September 1, 2025, which will roll into the first qualifying window starting July 1, 2026. So if you've been racing well this season with a licence, those results already count.

Why the change?

The old time-based system had a fundamental flaw: not all HYROX venues are created equal. Temperature, humidity, altitude, and floor layout all affect times, making it unfair to compare a 57-minute performance in Phoenix with one in Singapore.

A points-based model solves this by measuring athletes relative to their competition on the day, not against an absolute clock. As HYROX master coach Tiago Lousa put it in a recent interview: "The HYROX game has changed."

What this means for doubles

Elite doubles teams face an additional twist: both partners must share the same nationality (as defined by passport). Combined with the requirement to accumulate their best 3 races (instead of 5 for singles), doubles teams will need tighter coordination in their race calendars.

Who wins and who loses?

The new system clearly favors:

  • Consistent performers who can deliver strong results race after race
  • Strategic racers who plan their season around high-tier events
  • Well-funded athletes who can travel to multiple Majors and Regional events

It may challenge:

  • One-race wonders who peaked at the right moment under the old system
  • Athletes in remote locations with fewer access to high-tier events
  • Newcomers trying to break into the Elite 15 for the first time

The bottom line

HYROX is growing up. The new Elite 15 qualification system mirrors what we see in other professional sports: a full season of competition determining who the best truly is. For athletes with world-class ambitions, the era of showing up once and qualifying is over. Welcome to the points race.
